Battery check:
- Voltage should be 12.5V+ (use a multimeter to verify)
- Clean terminals
- Test charging system with an alternator tester
Fuel system:
- Fresh fuel (under 30 days)
- Fuel valve open
- Filter clear
- Pump working
Push Mowers Won’t Start
Honda-powered (LC121P):
- Auto-choke may be stuck — see our Honda GCV160/190 guide for details

AWD Mowers Starting Issues
HU800AWD uses a 190cc Briggs engine.
Common issues:
- Battery weak (electric start models)
- Carburetor from sitting
- Safety bail not engaged
Engine Problems
Engine Surging
RPM fluctuates up and down. This is a textbook surging problem.
Causes:
- Dirty air filter (most common)
- Carburetor needs cleaning
- Governor linkage binding
- Fuel cap vent blocked
Husqvarna-specific: Check the dual-element air filter. Both foam and paper sections need service.
Overheating
Symptoms:
- Power loss
- Engine shutdown
- Hot to touch
Causes:
- Cooling fins clogged
- Engine shroud damaged
- Low oil
- Heavy load
Prevention: Clean grass and debris from engine area after each use.
Excessive Oil Consumption
Check:
- Oil level at each use
- Look for visible leaks
- Blue smoke indicates burning
Common leak points:
- Valve cover gasket
- Oil filter seal
- Crankcase gasket
Engine Knocking
Causes:
- Low oil level
- Wrong fuel (too low octane)
- Carbon buildup
- Bearing wear
Immediate action: Stop engine if knocking occurs. Check oil level before anything else.
Transmission Problems
Hydrostatic Trans Issues
Husqvarna YTH mowers use Tuff Torq or similar hydrostatic transmissions.
Won’t move:
- Check bypass valve (rear of mower)
- Inspect drive belt
- Verify transmission engagement
Weak or slow:
- Belt slipping
- Low fluid (if serviceable)
- Internal wear
Jerky movement:
- Air in system
- Linkage binding
- Control rod adjustment

Drive Belt Problems
Symptoms:
- Squealing noise
- Slipping under load
- Won’t engage
Inspection:
- Check for cracks
- Measure width vs new belt
- Look for glazing
Replacement interval: Every 2-3 seasons or when showing wear.
Zero-Turn Steering Issues
One side weak:
- Hydraulic issue
- Pump failure
- Wheel motor problem
Both sides weak:
- Low hydraulic fluid
- Pump drive belt
- Filter clogged
Cutting Problems
Uneven Cut
Check:
- Tire pressure (equal on both sides)
- Deck level adjustment
- Blade condition
- Spindle bearings
Deck leveling:
- Park on flat surface
- Measure blade tip height
- Adjust hangers as needed
Blades Won’t Engage
Electrical:
- PTO switch
- Clutch fuse
- Safety switches
Mechanical:
- Belt off or broken
- Clutch failure
- Deck engagement cable
Poor Cut Quality
Causes:
- Dull blades
- Deck buildup
- Wrong blade type
- Mowing too fast
Fix:
- Sharpen or replace blades
- Clean deck underside
- Slow down
Deck Vibration
Causes:
- Bent blade (most common)
- Loose blade bolt
- Spindle bearing failure
- Deck belt worn

Automower Problems
Husqvarna Automowers are robotic mowers requiring different troubleshooting.

Common errors:
- Outside working area
- Blocked
- No loop signal
Boundary Wire Issues
No loop signal:
- Wire break somewhere in boundary
- Connector corrosion
- Charging station problem
Finding breaks:
- Use wire tracer tool
- Walk boundary looking for damage
- Check connections at station
Navigation Problems
Gets stuck often:
- Lawn too rough
- Obstacles not mapped
- Slopes too steep
- Grass too long
Goes outside boundary:
- Wire buried too deep
- Magnetic interference
- Signal strength issue

Battery Issues
Short runtime:
- Battery aging
- Heavy grass load
- Cold temperatures
Won’t charge:
- Dirty contacts
- Station not powered
- Battery failure
Automower batteries: Replacement batteries cost $100-200 depending on model.
Blade Replacement
Automower uses small pivoting blades that dull over time.
Replacement schedule: Every 1-2 months depending on use
Signs blades need replacing:
- Ragged cut appearance
- Increased runtime
- Brown grass tips
Blade kit: 9 blades per pack, ~$15-25
