Can I clean and reuse spark plugs?

What happens if spark plug gap is wrong?

Too wide: The spark has to jump a larger distance, resulting in weak or inconsistent spark. Causes misfiring, hard starting and poor performance especially under load.

Too narrow: The spark is weaker because less energy is released. Causes hard starting and incomplete combustion.

What’s the difference between resistor and non-resistor plugs?

Resistor plugs (indicated by “R” in the part number, like BPR6ES vs BP6ES) contain an internal resistor that reduces radio frequency interference. This prevents static in nearby electronics. Use whichever type your engine manufacturer specifies - the resistance affects spark characteristics.

Can I use automotive plugs in small engines?

Generally no. Small engine plugs have different heat ranges, thread reach and electrode configurations than automotive plugs. Even if the threads fit, the plug may project too far into the cylinder (causing piston contact) or not far enough (causing poor combustion). Always use plugs specified for your engine.

Why does my plug keep fouling?

Repeated plug fouling indicates an underlying engine problem:

  • Black, dry deposits = Running rich (dirty air filter, carb issues)
  • Black, wet deposits = Oil burning (worn rings, valve guides)
  • White deposits = Running lean or overheating

Address the root cause rather than just replacing plugs repeatedly.

Should I use anti-seize on spark plug threads?
