Won’t Start

Most Craftsman starting problems are fuel-related. Work through these in order:

  1. Check fuel — Gas over 30 days old causes hard starting and surging. Drain it and add fresh fuel with stabilizer.
  2. Prime the engine — Push the primer 3-5 times.
  3. Check spark plug — Most models use RC12YC, gap 0.030”. Replace if fouled.
  4. Check air filter — A clogged filter starves the engine.
  5. Test for spark — Ground the plug against the block and pull the cord. No spark = bad coil or kill switch.

If it cranks but won’t fire, clean the carburetor. Most Craftsman mowers use Briggs carburetors — remove the air filter housing, disconnect the fuel line, pull two bolts, clean all passages with carb cleaner and clear jets with thin wire. Reassemble with a new gasket ($8-15 for a kit).

Self-Propel Not Working

Drive cable adjustment is the #1 fix. Locate the cable at the rear transmission, find the adjustment barrel and turn to increase tension. Test and repeat until smooth.

Worn drive belt causes slipping under load or squealing. Tip the mower back (air filter up), remove the blade for access, release the tensioner and swap the belt. Part number 954-04259 for most M-series.

Transmission failure — cable adjusted but still no propel, grinding noise from the rear, wheels spin freely. Replace the whole unit ($60-100). Not rebuildable on most Craftsman models.

Cutting Problems

Uneven cut: Check blade condition, sharpen or replace, level the deck side-to-side and match all wheel heights.

Grass not discharging: Clean deck buildup, sharpen blade, mow when dry.

Vibration: Remove and inspect blade. Check blade bolt torque. If it still vibrates, the crankshaft may be bent from hitting something.
