Common Symptoms

Won’t Start

Most common complaint. Usually fuel-related.

Causes:

  • Gummed jets from old fuel
  • Stuck float needle
  • Clogged main jet
  • Bad primer bulb

Quick test: Spray starting fluid into carburetor.

  • Fires then dies = carburetor problem
  • Nothing = spark or compression issue

Surging/Hunting

Engine RPM rises and falls repeatedly.

Causes:

  • Partial jet blockage
  • Air leak at intake gasket
  • Governor linkage binding
  • Dirty air filter

Hard Starting

Requires excessive pulling or special procedures.

Causes:

  • Float level incorrect
  • Primer not working
  • Choke stuck open
  • Fuel delivery slow

Dies Under Load

Starts fine but stalls when mowing.

Causes:

  • High-speed jet clogged
  • Fuel delivery restriction
  • Governor issue
  • Air filter plugged

Cleaning Procedure

Tools Needed

  • 10mm socket/wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Compressed air
  • Small wire or jet tool
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step

1. Safety

Disconnect spark plug. Work in ventilated area.

2. Remove Air Filter

Take off cover and element. Note assembly order.

Disconnect throttle and choke linkage. Take photos first.

5. Remove Carburetor

Usually two 10mm bolts. Pull carb off intake.

6. Disassemble

  • Remove float bowl (single bolt)
  • Remove float and needle
  • Note jet positions

7. Clean

  • Spray cleaner through all passages
  • Use wire to clear jets
  • Clean bowl thoroughly
  • Inspect float condition

8. Reassemble

Troubleshooting

Fuel Delivery Test

  1. Disconnect line at carburetor
  2. Aim into container
  3. Turn on fuel or crank briefly
  4. Should flow steadily

No flow = upstream problem (tank, valve, filter, line)

Spark Test

  1. Remove spark plug
  2. Ground against engine
  3. Pull cord
  4. Look for blue spark

No spark = ignition problem, not carburetor

Compression Test

  1. Remove plug
  2. Install gauge
  3. Pull cord several times
  4. Should read 60-90 PSI

Low compression = engine wear

Air Leak Test

  1. Start engine (if possible)
  2. Spray carb cleaner around intake gasket
  3. RPM change indicates leak
  4. Replace gasket

When to Replace vs Clean

Clean When

  • Carb body is good
  • No visible damage
  • Throttle shaft tight
  • Just dealing with varnish

Replace When

  • Throttle shaft wobbles
  • Body cracked
  • Multiple cleaning attempts failed
  • Rebuild cost exceeds carb cost

Summary

Toro carburetor problems usually stem from old fuel. Most Toro mowers use Briggs engines with common carburetors. Clean the carb first - it fixes most issues. If cleaning doesn’t work, replacement carbs are affordable. Keep fuel fresh and add stabilizer when storing to prevent future problems.
