Common Problems

Battery Won’t Charge

Temperature issues: Most common cause. Lithium batteries won’t charge when too hot or cold.

  • Too hot: Just used or in direct sun
  • Too cold: Below 40°F (4°C)

Fix: Let battery reach room temperature (60-80°F) for 30+ minutes.

Dirty contacts: Corrosion or debris prevents proper connection.

Fix: Clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol and soft cloth.

Deep discharge: Battery sat unused for months and discharged too low.

Fix: Try the reset procedure below.

Battery Won’t Hold Charge

Charges fully but dies quickly during use.

Causes:

  • Normal aging (capacity decreases over time)
  • Cell imbalance
  • Damaged cells

Expected lifespan: 500+ charge cycles or 3-5 years typical use.

Battery Gets Hot

Some warmth during use and charging is normal.

Concerning heat:

  • Too hot to hold comfortably
  • Charger shows red light
  • Tool shuts down during use

Causes:

  • Overworking (high-demand tool use)
  • Cell damage
  • Internal short

Action: Stop using immediately if excessively hot. Let cool in safe location.

Charger Not Working

Test with different battery:

  • If another battery charges, original battery is bad
  • If no batteries charge, charger is bad

Check power supply:

  • Try different outlet
  • Check for tripped breaker
  • Inspect cord for damage

Battery Shows Full But No Power

Cause: BMS (battery management system) calibration issue

Fix: Full discharge and recharge cycle (see reset procedure)

Battery Reset

Method 1: Full Cycle Reset

  1. Charge battery to 100%
  2. Use in tool until completely dead
  3. Recharge to 100%
  4. Repeat 2-3 times

This recalibrates the BMS fuel gauge.

Method 2: Charger Reset

  1. Unplug charger for 60 seconds
  2. Plug back in
  3. Wait 10 seconds
  4. Insert battery
  5. Check for charging

Method 3: Tool Activation

For batteries that won’t charge at all:

  1. Insert battery in EGO tool
  2. Pull trigger briefly (1-2 seconds)
  3. Remove battery
  4. Try charging again

Sometimes engaging the tool wakes the battery electronics.

Method 4: Contact Cleaning

  1. Remove battery from all devices
  2. Use isopropyl alcohol on cotton swab
  3. Clean all metal contacts on battery
  4. Clean charger contacts too
  5. Let dry completely
  6. Try charging

Battery Storage

Short-Term (Under 3 Months)

  • Store at room temperature
  • Any charge level is fine
  • Keep dry

Long-Term (3+ Months)

  • Store at 30-50% charge
  • Check every 3 months
  • Recharge if below 20%
  • Avoid extreme temperatures

Winter Storage

  • Bring batteries inside
  • Don’t store in freezing garage
  • Charge every 2-3 months
  • Warm to room temp before charging

Extending Battery Life

Charging Tips

  • Don’t leave on charger indefinitely
  • Charge at room temperature
  • Use appropriate charger for battery size
  • Avoid charging immediately after heavy use

Usage Tips

  • Don’t run battery completely dead
  • Let battery rest between heavy use sessions
  • Use right size battery for the tool
  • Avoid extreme temperature operation

Avoid These

  • Storing fully charged for months
  • Storing completely dead
  • Extreme heat exposure
  • Physical damage (drops, impacts)
  • Water exposure

When to Replace

Signs Battery Needs Replacing

  • Runtime dropped below 50% of original
  • Won’t hold charge despite troubleshooting
  • Physical damage (cracks, swelling)
  • Excessive heat during use/charging
  • More than 4-5 years old with regular use

Swollen Battery Warning

If the battery case appears swollen or bulging:

  1. Stop using immediately
  2. Don’t charge
  3. Don’t puncture or crush
  4. Take to battery recycling center
  5. Replace battery

Swollen batteries are a fire risk. Handle carefully.

Cost Analysis

BatteryNew CostPer Ah
2.5 Ah$130$52/Ah
5.0 Ah$200$40/Ah
7.5 Ah$280$37/Ah
10.0 Ah$350$35/Ah

Best value: Larger batteries cost less per Ah. The 7.5 Ah is often the sweet spot.

Warranty

EGO offers a 3-year warranty on batteries. Keep your receipt.

What’s covered:

  • Manufacturing defects
  • Premature capacity loss
  • Charging issues from defects

Not covered:

  • Physical damage
  • Normal wear
  • Improper storage

Charger Replacement

If the charger is the problem:

ChargerPriceCharge Time (5Ah)
CH2100 Standard$5090 min
CH5500 Rapid$10050 min
CH7500 Turbo$15040 min

The standard charger works fine for most users. Rapid/Turbo chargers are worth it for heavy users with multiple batteries.

Third-Party Batteries

Aftermarket EGO-compatible batteries exist but have significant concerns:

Risks:

  • Unknown cell quality
  • No safety certifications
  • May damage tools
  • Fire risk
  • Void tool warranty

Recommendation: Stick with genuine EGO batteries. The cost difference isn’t worth the safety and reliability risks with lithium batteries.

Summary

Most EGO battery problems come down to temperature or aging. Let batteries reach room temperature before charging. Clean contacts regularly. For batteries that won’t charge at all, try the reset procedures. EGO batteries typically last 3-5 years with proper care. When replacement is needed, larger capacity batteries offer better value per Ah. Don’t risk safety with aftermarket batteries - stick with genuine EGO.
