Your Greenworks chainsaw won’t start. Or the chain won’t move. Or it stalls every time you cut something. These battery chainsaws are reliable, but they have safety interlocks that trip people up.

Most problems come down to three things: the safety sequence (lockout then trigger), the chain brake (people forget to release it), and dull chains (they strain the motor). Fix those and you’ve solved 90% of complaints.

Greenworks 80V Chainsaw Models Overview

All use Greenworks 80V batteries. Higher capacity = more cuts.

4.0Ah150-200
5.0Ah180-240

Greenworks Chainsaw Won’t Start Fixes

Pull the trigger and nothing happens.

The safety sequence matters:

  1. Press trigger lockout FIRST (top of handle)
  2. THEN squeeze main trigger

If you squeeze trigger first, nothing happens. It’s a safety feature.

Also check:

  • Battery fully seated? Push until it clicks.
  • Battery charged? Check LED indicators.
  • Chain brake released? Pull forward guard back toward handle.

Still nothing?

  • Remove battery, wait 30 seconds, reinstall
  • Clean battery contacts with dry cloth
  • Try a different 80V battery

Greenworks Chainsaw Runtime Problems

Expected cuts (4.0Ah battery): 150-200 through 6-inch logs

Why it’s short:

  • Dull chain increases motor load dramatically
  • Heavy cutting uses more power
  • Cold weather cuts capacity 30-50%
  • Battery age

Improve runtime: Keep chain sharp. Use proper technique—let the saw do the work instead of forcing it.

Greenworks Chainsaw Battery Problems

  1. Check outlet has power
  2. Check charger LED (amber = charging, green = done)
  3. Clean contacts
  4. Battery at room temperature?

Greenworks Chainsaw Stalls While Cutting

The saw stops mid-cut. Motor overload protection kicked in.

Causes:

  1. Dull chain (most common)—forces motor to work too hard
  2. Chain too tight
  3. Bar groove packed with debris
  4. Pinched cut binding the chain

Fix: Wait 30 seconds, then resume with less pressure. Sharpen the chain if it keeps happening.

Greenworks Chainsaw Chain Not Moving

Motor runs but chain is stationary.

  1. Chain brake engaged (pull guard back toward handle)
  2. Chain derailed from bar
  3. Chain too tight
  4. Debris blocking sprocket

Greenworks Chainsaw Chain Comes Off

Why it derails:

  • Tension too loose
  • Bar rails worn
  • Wrong chain for bar

How to fix:

  1. Remove battery
  2. Loosen tensioner
  3. Reseat chain in bar groove (cutters face forward on top)
  4. Adjust tension properly
  5. Tighten cover nuts

Greenworks Chainsaw Dull Chain Signs

  • Fine sawdust instead of chips
  • Have to push hard
  • Cut wanders or curves
  • Smoke from the cut

Sharpen it or replace it. Most chains can be sharpened 3-5 times.

Greenworks Chainsaw Oiler Problems

  1. Is there oil in the tank?
  2. Run saw for 30 seconds over cardboard—you should see oil spray
  3. Clean oil port with small wire
  4. Use proper bar oil (not motor oil)

Greenworks Chainsaw Maintenance Tips

Before Each Use

  • Check oil level
  • Check chain tension
  • Test chain brake

After Each Use

  • Clean debris
  • Check tension (chains stretch when warm)
  • Top off oil

Every 5-10 Hours

  • Sharpen chain
  • Clean bar groove
  • Flip bar for even wear

Storage

  • Remove battery
  • Clean saw
  • Light oil on chain

Greenworks 80V Chainsaw Problems Summary

Greenworks 80V chainsaws are reliable for homeowner use. Most problems come from the safety sequence (lockout then trigger) or dull chains. Keep the chain sharp—it’s the #1 cause of poor performance and motor strain. The 80V platform handles most firewood and yard cleanup tasks well.
