Complete Guide: Battery for Key Fob: Replacement Guide by Car Brand
The battery for key fob remotes is almost always a CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell that costs $3-8 and takes two minutes to replace. Toyota, Honda and most Asian brands use CR2032. Some European cars use CR2025 or CR1632. When your fob’s range drops or you need multiple button presses, it’s time for a new battery.
This guide covers key fob batteries by car brand, how to replace them and what to do when the new battery doesn’t fix the problem.
Key Fob Battery Types

Most key fobs use 3-volt lithium coin cell batteries. The number tells you the size:
| Battery | Diameter | Thickness | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| CR2032 | 20mm | 3.2mm | Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan |
| CR2025 | 20mm | 2.5mm | BMW, Mercedes, some VW/Audi |
| CR1632 | 16mm | 3.2mm | Some Lexus, older Honda |
| CR2016 | 20mm | 1.6mm | Older remotes, some European |
| CR2450 | 24mm | 5.0mm | Some newer smart keys |
CR2032 is by far the most common. When in doubt, pop your fob open and check the battery—the type is printed right on it.
CR2032 vs CR2025: Can You Swap Them?
These batteries have the same diameter but different thickness. CR2032 is 3.2mm thick. CR2025 is 2.5mm thick.
CR2025 in a CR2032 slot: Will work but may have loose contact. Not recommended.
CR2032 in a CR2025 slot: Won’t fit. The fob won’t close properly.
Stick with the correct battery. They cost the same anyway.

Where to Buy Key Fob Batteries
Key fob batteries are sold everywhere. Price varies wildly for the same battery.
Price Comparison
| Source | CR2032 Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar store | $1-2 | Works fine for most uses |
| Amazon (bulk) | $0.50-1 each | Best value, 8-20 packs |
| Walmart | $3-5 | Single or 2-pack |
| Auto parts store | $5-10 | Often overpriced |
| Dealership | $10-20 | Ripoff, same battery |
The cheap dollar store batteries work fine. Premium brands like Energizer or Duracell may last slightly longer but it’s marginal. Buy a multipack and keep spares in your glovebox.
Signs Your Key Fob Battery Is Dying
Replace the battery when you notice:
- Reduced range - Have to be closer to the car for it to respond
- Multiple presses needed - Button doesn’t work on first try
- Delayed response - Noticeable lag between press and unlock
- Low battery warning - Many cars show this on the dash
- Backup key needed - Fob stops working entirely
Don’t wait until it dies completely. A dead key fob is annoying when you’re locked out of your car.

Key Fob Not Working After Battery Replacement
New battery installed but the fob still doesn’t work? Check these issues:
Battery Installed Wrong
Most common problem. The positive (+) side should face up in almost all fobs. Look for a small + symbol in the battery compartment showing correct orientation.
Dead New Battery
Happens more than you’d think, especially with dollar store batteries. Test with a multimeter if you have one—should read 3.0V or close to it.
Corroded Contacts
Green or white residue on the battery contacts prevents good connection. Clean with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Let dry before inserting new battery.
Fob Needs Reprogramming
Rare, but some fobs lose their programming if the battery dies completely or is left out too long. Check your owner’s manual for the reprogramming procedure or visit the dealer.
Fob Is Damaged
Water damage, drops and general wear can kill key fobs. If the circuit board is cracked or corroded, no battery will fix it. Replacement fob time.
How to Reprogram a Key Fob
If your fob stops responding after battery replacement, try reprogramming it. Procedures vary by brand.
Generic Method (Works for Many Cars)
- Sit in the driver’s seat with all doors closed
- Insert the key in the ignition (or press start button with fob)
- Turn to ON position (don’t start engine)
- Press lock button on the fob
- Turn ignition off
- Repeat 3 times quickly
- Locks should cycle to confirm programming mode
- Press lock button on fob to program
- Turn ignition off to exit
Brand-Specific Notes
Toyota: Most don’t need reprogramming after battery change. If needed, the dealer can do it.
Honda: Insert key, turn to ON, press lock within 5 seconds, turn off, repeat 3 times.
Ford: Newer Fords require dealer programming. Older models use a sequence similar to generic method.
Nissan: Usually no reprogramming needed. If required, dealer visit necessary.
Key Fob Battery Life Tips
Make your battery last longer:
- Don’t store with metal objects - Keys or coins can accidentally press buttons
- Keep away from electronics - Strong signals can drain the battery
- Use the mechanical key occasionally - Reduces button presses
- Replace proactively - Swap at 3 years even if still working
- Buy quality batteries - Panasonic, Energizer and Duracell tend to last longest
Emergency: Key Fob Battery Dead
Locked out with a dead key fob? Most cars have backup options:
Hidden Key Slot
Many cars with push-button start have a hidden keyhole. Check:
- Behind a plastic cap on the door handle
- Under a cover near the steering column
- Inside the center console
Use the metal emergency key from inside your fob.
Fob-to-Button Method
Some push-button cars will start if you hold the dead fob directly against the start button. The button can read the fob’s passive RFID chip even with a dead battery.
Dashboard Fob Holder
Some Nissans, Toyotas and others have a slot in the dash or console where you insert the fob to start when the battery dies.
Check your owner’s manual before you’re stranded.
